Barbican centre with Georgie and friend
announcer comes on and tells us that the qawwali group have been stuck in faislabad for the last two days waiting for a plane so have literally only landed an hour and a half ago
flamenco chaps come on for maybe 4 or 5 songs
drummer with snared box and a bass drum
guitarist
female singer
male singer
last song female dances to the last part
then qawwali group come on to tumultuous applause - i think most of the people in the audience are here to see them and their leader
they do a couple of much longer songs then the flamenco group come back on and the fun begins!
flamenco play for a while getting back into the rhythm and then begin exchanges with qawwali group - really is remarkable to here the qawwali and the flamenco vocal styles intertwining and the guitar with the qawwali vocal sounds incredible
they do 2 or 3 songs and then there is an ecstatic encore
the three singers come on alone and sing first male flamenco then female flamenco then qawwali (much greater applause for him!) then back to the male flamenco, who shares a few lines with the female, then in comes the qawwali for the finale with all three singing intertwining vocals!
astounding
quite apart from the giggles brought on by the first qawwali song which has the lyrics.....maaaaaaaaaaaaary - naughty mary, naughty mary, naughty mary, naughty mary
